For centuries Taormina has been the inspiration of poets and artists from all over the world, mainly due to its magnificent Greek Theatre dating back to the 3rd c BC; a place of culture and education for the ancient Greeks, later totally transformed by the Romans into an arena for their violent gladitorial combats. Having been pillaged and then abandoned for centuries, today it is the best example in the whole of Italy of the clearly visible transformation from Greek "theatre" into Roman "amphitheatre".
After extensive restoration works in 1955, this marvellously preserved structure with an absolutely stunning view now hosts a summer arts festival of music, theatre and dance (June July and August).
